Press Release Distribution vs Media Outreach: Know the Difference
Distribution and outreach are often bundled together in PR conversations, but they solve different problems.
Distribution
Distribution sends the release through a network or publishing system. The typical evidence is a distribution or publication report showing syndicated copies.
Media outreach
Outreach identifies specific journalists, editors or creators and pitches the story directly. The aim is independent editorial interest, not automatic republication of the release.
When to use both
A formal release can provide a stable source of facts while a separate personalized pitch gives journalists a reason to care. Using both can make sense for genuinely newsworthy announcements.
Measure them differently
Measure distribution by delivery, publication evidence and relevant referral or discovery signals. Measure outreach by responses, conversations and independent stories—not by counting syndicated copies.
